The Original Black Forest Cake Recipe

Originated way before a century by a local confectioner in the small landscape of Black forest, Eastern Germany.  Black forest was known for its amazing stock and quality of liquor before the cake was invented in 1880s, the liquor made out of distilled cherries and vine. Later the confectioner added the similar objects within his black forest cake recipe. A layer of torte gateau spread with creamy white whipped cream and cherry, sprinkled with dark chocolate shavings from both the top and sides. The recipe was so well received by the world that today it has become one of the major cake favours around the globe, and every nation twisting it in it with its version.

  • 2/3 cups of flour (all purpose)
  • 2/3 cups of cocoa powder (dark preferred)
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon of salt
  • 1 ½ cups of sugar ( refined and powdered)
  • 2 eggs or 1 tin of condensed milk as an alternative
  • 3 drops of vanilla extract
  • 1 ½ cup of buttermilk

For filling

  • ½ cup of liquor(cherry)
  • 2 cups of icing sugar
  • ¼ cups of espresso coffee

For icing

  • 2 cups of heavy whipping cream
  • 2 tbsp. milk powder
  • 2 tbsp. icing sugar


Take a bowl and mix the dry ingredients of the cake, in a separate bowl mix the wet ingredients consisting of butter, milk, condensed milk or egg, vanilla extract. Once the ingredient is mixed to a perfect semi-thick consistency, add the dry ingredients gradually. Put the well-mixed batter into the oven under the temperature of 250 degrees for 20 minutes. Once the cake is well baked, leave it to the side to come under room temperature.

For filling mix all the ingredients to a semi-sold consistency until it hits the right kind of creamy texture. Cut the cake into three equal halves, spread the filling evenly. Sprinkle some cherry before covering with another layer.

Take a mixing bowl and mix the whipped cream, unsalted butter and icing sugar in equal proportions. Mix it until the sugar granules dissolve into the whipped cream and butter. Spread well. Decorate the following with chocolate shavings and cherries on top of whipped cream mounds and serve in room temperature.
